A lot of people are aware that loud noise can damage their hearing. Apart from being physically painful, there is a much more severe symptom of hearing damage, known as noise induced hearing loss. In the last few centuries, as industrialisation and technology have developed, people find themselves exposed to noise much more frequently – at sporting events and concerts, in factories and workshops, and even in our personal lives, with mp3 players being responsible for an increase in hearing damage, particularly amongst adolescents.
When it comes to hearing protection options, adults are well catered for. However, until recently, there was a severe lack of options for children. Thankfully, this is changing every day.
The Need for Hearing Protection for Children
The fact is, children shouldn’t really be in environments where there is loud noise – and up until rcently, this wasn’t an issue. But times are changing, and children often attend concerts and sporting events with their parents. Added to this, you’ve probably seen children helping out in the yard while the lawnmower is running, or watching an aeroplane overhead while sitting on dad’s shoulders. All of these are situations where hearing damage is a real possibility.
Just because children’s ears are small, it doesn’t mean their ears are protected – they are still at risk of having their hearing damaged. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent this happening.
Hearing Protection Options for Children
The easiest, and most readily available, option is standard earplugs. While these are cheap and easy to find, they aren’t really suitable for children as it’s hard to fit them into a child’s narrow ear canal. For very young children (and babies) these also pose the risk of becoming a choking hazard. The more traditional adult earmuff design is another possible option, but these are usually too tight for children’s small and soft heads. The best option is hearing protection earmuffs designed specifically for children. These are becoming more readily available, and are a must for any child that ends up in a situation where there is loud noise.
If you, or someone you know, often take their children to noisy environments, you’ll appreciate just how important it is to have children’s hearing protection available. To find a complete range of childrens earmuffs, head to: www.earmuffsforkids.com
